Connection starts with context

Behind each list of people nearby sit four decisions: how wide the area is drawn, what the ranking weighs, who is allowed to make contact, and how much review the system can carry. This overview explains each one — and what each costs.

Trade-offs

Each decision costs something

A nearby list feels effortless because the effort was moved elsewhere. These are the six places it went.

Area width

Draw the area narrowly and the list is short but accurate. Draw it widely and the list grows while the word "nearby" quietly stops meaning anything.

Ranking weight

Order by distance alone and the list is honest but shallow. Weigh in shared interests and the list becomes useful — and much harder to explain.

Contact rules

Open contact to everyone and the list is lively but hostile. Gate it behind settings and it becomes safer — at the price of approaches that never happen.

Review capacity

Every report a system invites is a report someone has to read. Promising fast review without the people to do it is how trust gets spent.

Written standards

Rules published before they are enforced cost flexibility — every decision can be checked against them. That is exactly why they are worth publishing.

Decisions that arrive

A system that says no clearly — closed gate, declined approach — feels colder than one that stays vague. Vagueness is how disappointment gets deferred, not avoided.

Area

Proximity matters, connecting as well

A phone reports a position that is already seconds old, rounded to a coarse area, and attached to a person who has since moved. The list is built from that approximation — not from where anyone actually is.

That is why a well-built system shows bands instead of distances. "Nearby" and "wider area" are the least precise honest descriptions available, and precision beyond them would be theatre.

Abstract map with markers standing in for the nearby and wider-area bands
Ranking

Being closest wins almost nothing

Distance alone produces a list that is accurate and useless. So ranking weighs in what people have chosen to share — and the moment it does, the order stops being a fact and becomes an opinion.

Three shared interests are highlighted below. In a live system they would pull those profiles upward; here they only show what that pull would look like.

Permission

Contact is a permission, not a default

Every profile carries an approach setting that decides who can open a conversation. The setting is visible before anyone writes — so nobody spends a message on a closed door.

  • Presence Whether a profile appears in lists at all. Withdrawing presence withdraws the profile everywhere, because a person cannot be discoverable and hidden at once.
  • Interests Which interests are visible, and therefore which ones pull the profile upward in someone else's ranking.
  • Approaches Who may open a conversation. A closed gate is shown as closed — a well-built interface says so rather than letting a message vanish.
  • Distance band Whether the profile's band is shown. The band is already coarse; hiding it entirely is a legitimate choice.
Failure

What happens when someone breaks it

Every system on this page eventually meets someone who ignores it. What matters is whether the response was written down before that moment — or improvised after it.

  • Reporting sits on every profile and inside every conversation, needs no written explanation, and does not require waiting for a reply first.
  • One report is enough to open a review. Nobody is asked to justify why something was unwelcome.
  • Standards are published before they are enforced, and any decision can be appealed once, to someone other than the person who made it.
Questions

Asked often enough to write down

Why bands instead of exact distances?
Because the underlying position is already coarse and already old. A precise-looking number would claim accuracy the system does not have — bands are the honest version of the same information.
Why isn't the closest person shown first?
Because distance alone produces an accurate, useless list. Ranking weighs in shared interests, which makes the order an opinion rather than a fact — this overview treats that as a decision to explain, not to hide.
What does the approach setting actually do?
It decides who may open a conversation, and it is visible before anyone writes. Where the gate is closed, the interface says so instead of letting a message disappear into it.
What happens when I sign in?
When you sign in you're presented several profiles nearby with whom you're able to start a conversation with.
Closing

Read the machinery before the marketing

Everything on this page is a decision someone made on your behalf. The point of writing it down is that decisions written down can be questioned — and the ones that cannot survive questioning deserve to be.

About

LocalPlansSocial, described plainly

A written overview of proximity-based discovery: how these systems assemble a list, what they reveal while doing it, and what a person is actually left in control of.

Purpose

Why this overview exists

Location-aware software now sits underneath a large part of everyday life, and almost everything written about how it works is written to sell it. Features get named. Mechanisms do not. Someone is told a person is nearby without ever being told what nearby meant at the moment the list was built.

This overview leaves the marketing out and describes the machinery: how a signal from a device becomes a category, how a list acquires its order, and where each approach stops being reliable. It is meant to be read once, top to bottom, by someone who has never worked on a system like this.

Scope

What is covered

  • What appearsHow a coarse area and an overlap of interests turn into a short list.
  • How it is orderedWhy the nearest result is seldom the one shown first.
  • Who may make contactThe permissions that sit between a profile and a conversation.
  • What happens nextReporting, review, and standards written down before they are applied.
Method

Editorial standards

Every section is checked against one test: whether someone outside the industry could follow it without a glossary. Where platforms diverge, the text describes the shape they have in common instead of picking one product and calling it typical.

Claims stay general deliberately. No figures, no league tables, no recommendations — the numbers behind these systems are not public, and this overview would rather say less than estimate. Where a description turns out to be imprecise, it is corrected here rather than quietly dropped.

Standards, written down first

The rules that govern conduct between people. Written in plain language, published before they are enforced rather than after, and applied the same way each time.

Conduct

Five standards

  • Respect the gateContact happens inside the service, under whatever approach setting the other person has chosen. A declined approach is not repeated. Looking someone up through another channel after being declined is among the most serious breaches on this page.
  • Be who you say you areOne account per person. No impersonating another person or organisation, no invented details in a profile, and nothing presented as your own that is not.
  • Keep it civilNo harassment, no threats, no pressure of any kind. One report is enough to open a review, and nobody is asked to justify why something was unwelcome.
  • Leave visibility aloneWhat a person chooses to show — presence, interests, distance band — belongs to them. Passing on another person's profile, words or activity outside the service is not acceptable, however it was obtained.
  • No automationApproaches sent in bulk, by script or by any automated means are removed. This is built for one person contacting another.
Reporting

How to report

A report should take fewer steps than the behaviour that caused it. Reporting sits on every profile and inside every conversation, needs no written explanation to submit, and does not require waiting for a reply first. Reports are read by people rather than sorted by a form.

Enforcement

What follows a report

Standards are applied before a report arrives as well as after: profiles are reviewed as they appear, and automated detection runs alongside human review. What follows is decided by how serious the behaviour was, not by how established the account is.

  • ReviewThe account is examined once a report is filed or a signal is raised, before anyone is contacted about it.
  • RestrictionContact or visibility is narrowed while a question about the account remains open.
  • RemovalAn account that breaks these standards is removed. Serious breaches are permanent.

Any decision can be appealed once, to someone other than the person who made it. Appeals are decided against these same standards, in the same plain language as everything else here.

Reading a list

How the nearby list works

The list is assembled from a coarse area rather than a position. Every profile sits in one of two bands — nearby or wider area — and the band is the least precise honest description of distance.

Order does not follow distance alone. Shared interests weigh into the arrangement, which is why the closest profile is not necessarily at the top.

Opening a profile shows what the list shows, at greater length: the interests that profile has chosen to make visible, and the band it sits in. Nothing beyond that appears without an approach.

Visibility

Who may make contact

On a service of this kind, every profile carries an approach setting deciding who can open a conversation. That setting is visible before an approach is made, so that nobody writes into a closed door — and where the gate is closed, a well-built interface says so rather than letting the message vanish.

A profile's own visibility works the same way: presence, interests and band appear only as far as that profile allows. Withdrawing visibility also withdraws the profile from the lists, because a person cannot be discoverable and hidden at once.

Conversations

Starting and continuing

A conversation begins with an approach rather than an opening line demanded by a form. Once open, a thread keeps what was written in the order it was written. Messages cannot be edited afterwards, so a thread shows what was actually said.

There is no obligation to reply and no indicator applying a deadline to one. A thread that goes quiet stays quiet without consequence.

Safety

Raising a concern

On a live service, reporting belongs on every profile and inside every conversation, needs no written explanation, and does not require waiting for a reply first. The standards themselves, and what follows a report, are set out in the Community Guidelines rather than decided case by case.

Concerns about how information is handled belong to the Privacy Policy. Concerns about what a service may ask of a person belong to the Terms. Both are written to be read in full, and both are short enough that doing so is realistic.

If something has happened to you on a platform this overview discusses, this site cannot act on it — only that platform's operator can. If you believe a crime has been committed, contact your local police service. If someone is in immediate danger, contact your local emergency number.
